Metal Matters!
The best coins for coin rings are nonferrous metals and alloys. You can determine if a coin is suitable for a coin ring by holding a magnet to it. If it is magnetic, the coin contains steel and is not suitable for a coin ring. If it is nonmagnetic, it can be made into a coin ring.
Nonferrous coins :
90% Silver (Pre-1965 U.S. dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollars)
10–93% Silver - European and Mexican coins
Copper, Bronze, Brass (need coating to prevent green finger)
Avoid: Pure Silver (.999, too soft, could warp and won’t wear well over time) and Steel (our current process and tools do not support steel or steel alloy coins).
Design & Detail Considerations:
Outer Detail Survives: Choose coins with edge lettering, wreaths, or borders.
Center Designs Partially Lost: Portraits or emblems may be lost during cutting and shaping.
